On Tuesday June 24, the Metropolitan Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame held their 22nd Annual Induction Ceremony and Scholarship Banquet at the Avalon Hotel, with a special VIP cocktail reception preceding the evening's festivities. Highlights of the night included the awarding of scholarships to 33 city and county high school athletes. The students were selected by their high school guidance counselors. In addition to the Sports Hall of Fame scholarships, eight of the recipients (four male and four female) were selected to receive additional scholarships. The night concluded with the induction of the 2008 Hall of Fame class. Each year the Sports Hall of Fame inducts ten living and two deceased individuals to honor their athletic achievements and contributions to the community. This year's honorees included former New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Dietrich Jells; Craig Latimer, founder and coordinator of the Highmark QUAD Games; and Eric Hicks, who spent nine seasons as a defensive end with the Kansas City Chiefs and one with the New York Jets. |
