Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau's relationship can be considered the Citizen Kane of student-teacher sexual misconduct. Eleven years ago, their scandalous affair brought the taboo of students engaging in sexual relationships with their teachers into the spotlight when their story became national news. Soon after Letourneau’s sentence to 89 months in prison, more cases were reported than ever before, and the question of ethics on the part of educators arose. Despite all that, the epidemic shows no signs of relenting, and in some cases, rules that prohibit it are being bent. Now that the line has been crossed, how can we expect educators to step back? |
